Penn Future -- A Call to Action

As you may know, PYWN is a member of Penn Future and the Next Great City Coalition, an umbrella organization committed to a greener Philadelphia. We recently received an update from Christine Knapp, Director of Outreach for Penn Future, outlining many of the achievements from the previous year, and asking for your help. Please read on for Christine's message, and to find out what you can do to help green our wonderful city.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for all the work that you and the Philadelphia Young Women's Network have done to make this year extraordinary. We’ve had major victories in passing green jobs and energy conservation legislation, and we appreciate your support.

Before 2008 comes to a close, I wanted to invite you to take a few more simple steps that will go a long way in helping Pennsylvania stay on the right track towards our clean energy future. Would you be willing to sign on to the CoolPennsylvania Campaign?

As I’m sure you know, Pennsylvania produces more heat-trapping gases than 101 countries combined. We need to do our part to reduce our use of energy made by old outdated coal- and oil-fired power plants, and to call on our leaders for major changes right now from industry and government.

Add your organization to our growing list of endorsers. Doing so simply means you’ll be included in the public list of endorsing groups, and that you’ll receive timely information from PennFuture about opportunities to get more involved in state policy formation to achieve the campaign goals.

In addition, the prospects at the federal level have never looked better for strong, swift action to curb global warming and to expand our commitments to developing new, clean renewable energy. We could use your help making this happen now.

Can you sign also onto a letter asking Congress to support strong science-based global warming legislation? View the letter here, and then visit the Union of Concerned Scientists’ site to sign on now.

Lastly, if you’re interested in attending a briefing from the Union of Concerned Scientists to learn more about the impacts of global warming on Pennsylvania or if you want to join a meeting to urge your member of Congress to take swift action, you can let us know by following this link and indicating how else you might be able to show your support.

Thanks!

New Girls' Club

Ran across this article in the NY Times today about the evolution of the age old technique of networking. My favorite part of the piece is the last paragraph, as it addresses what I've been saying for some time now. I don't want to break into the Old Boys' Club. I'm just going to create a New Girls' Club. No boys allowed. Well...maybe a few.

Effective Networking Tips from Missy Quinn

Missy Quinn, Director of Recruitment for Contemporary Staffing Solutions, spoke at our October networking panel. She shared her wealth of expertise with those in attendance. Among the key tips she offered were:

1. Begin with a plan...Why are you attending?

2. Have your 30 second commercial prepared about yourself/your business. Make sure you've practiced so you come off confident.

3. Bring your business cards. Nothing should be crossed off on your card.

4. Wear a watch so you can keep track of time. Get what you can and the move on.

5. Try to get a list of the people who will be attending, then make a plan to meet them. Make sure you know something about their company/business.

6. Pass leads first. If you do, you will have it come back to you tenfold.

7. Name tags should be worn on the right side of your suit jacket so they're easily read when you shake hands.

8. Wear a suit jacket with two pockets or carry a business card case with two sections. Put their cards in the left pocket and your own cards in the right pocket.

9. Bring a small hand bag with a pen to give/get referrals.

10. If you go with a co-worker, spread out so you'll be able to make more contacts.

11. Make sure you keep your contact list updated.

12. Follow up by e-mail, phone, interest, coffee or lunch and have fun!

Welcome!

Philadelphia Young Women's Network welcomes you to our blog!

The primary purpose of the blog is to keep you informed as to the events PYWN is hosting and attending. But we also want to hear what you are doing, what you are thinking about and the type of programming you'd like to see PYWN develop for you.

Comment, express your opinions and share your thoughts and ideas. PYWN exists because of you but we need your help to continue to grow and expand so we can be the best organization for you.

The following is just some of what you have to look forward to in the coming weeks as we develop the content for this blog:

Meet the Board - If you haven't had a chance to meet the Board in person, you can meet them "virtually".

Young Women's Network in Other Cities - We are a national organization. Check out what our sisters are doing in other cities. If you happen to leave the City of Brotherly Love, you have a starting point for learning about your new city with the help of the Young Women's Network!

Events Calendar - We are a very active organization. We host events and we participate in events hosted by other organizations in the city. Check the calendar often to see what issues young women (and men!) are engaged in, thinking about, and talking about in and around the City of Brotherly Love.

Suffice it to say, we are very excited about launching this project. We are committed to the community of young women in Philadelphia and want to provide you with the best programming and the best opportunities to thrive in this city and beyond.

We hope you enjoy reading this blog as much as we enjoy publishing it for you!
